Effective Tips for Working From Home Efficiently and Happily

Due to the recent outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, many cities are going into lockdown. This situation is accelerating the working from the home trend, which has been going on for a few years now. It allows businesses to carry on productivity with limited impact in a secure and collaborative way. 

As working from home is new to many people, we thought we can share some tips and suggestions that will help employees around the world to work effectively during this global crisis. 

Although, working from home nowadays is not so different from working from the office. Many businesses already use technology to maximize their productivity by doing virtual meetings through video conferencing tools like Skype, Facetime, and Google Hangouts.

Here are a few tips that we have found through online research and from our own experience of working from home, that we believe would be beneficial for everyone:

Invest in a standing desk

A standing desk can relieve you from lower back pain or hip pain that can occur from sitting down for the whole day. It does not mean you have to stand all day. Walk, move around the house, sit with good posture. The movement is important for good health. It will also inspire creativity in your work, encouraging you to have a different view on things. 

Take walking meetings when you can

Meetings do not always require you to sit in one place. When you are having a phone call meeting, just grab your earpieces and go outside. It will make you healthier and happier.

Meal and snack prep

All the works, movements, and thinking will make you hungry. You don’t want to spend time thinking about what to eat. Have some fresh fruits, cut up vegetables, chicken breasts, boiled eggs, and other healthy foods that you love stocked up in your fridge. It will immediately boost your productivity. 

Apply the ROWE mindset

ROWE stands for a results-only work environment. If you are the CEO or the manager of a company, do not count the hours your employees work, track the results. By focusing on the goals and metrics, you will find that productivity is going up, while the old-school idea of counting desk time will only bore the employees. 

It’s OK to mix work and life

Sometimes what’s going on in your personal life can hamper your productivity. And it is OK. Just go with the flow. Deal with all your problems without feeling guilty. You will find yourself happier and more productive at work.

Select and set up your tech, strategically

Working from home can sometimes become complex. So, experts suggest that you use multiple devices with all work apps for effective team collaboration. For complex and collaborative works connect your laptop to a large monitor. To have quick conversations and responses rely on your smartphone devices. These will keep you efficient and connected. 

Have fun with your colleagues

One of the best parts of having a real office environment is being able to socialize and have fun with colleagues. Do the same from home. Joke around, share memes, interesting GIFs, photos, and news. It creates a bond between colleagues and keeps everyone content. 

Transfer your commute time to intentional rest time

While working from home, you are saving all the time you have for traveling to and from the office. Think of them as your rest allowance. Instead of stressing out about the work, start and end your day with calming rituals. Those are times to detach yourself from your work. Use them wisely. 

Remove distractions and set a schedule for these distractions

When you are not in your office environment, distractions are inevitable. Identify what distractions bother you the most. If there is noise around you, use noise-canceling headphones. If it is a family member, let them know what time you will be working from and when it will end. If it is your phone and social media, use a social media blocking tool. Have a schedule outside work hours for all distractions. It will ensure you a productive time during work and a happy time after that.

Try a zero-based calendar

A zero-based schedule is there to ensure that you account for every hour of your day. Zero-based is an excellent way of scheduling your day if you are a remote worker. Schedule your works and your favorite activities accordingly in a zero-based calendar. This will ensure you do not push off your fun activities due to lack of time. Having less free space in the calendar is a way of ensuring you are using your time wisely with increased productivity. 

Working from home is fun, flexible, liberating and an excellent opportunity to create a healthy lifestyle while being productive at the same time. It may take a little time to get used to it, but working from home can make you more efficient at work and happy in personal life. The only thing you need to do is find out what ways work best for you.
